Do you think this movie is appropriate for a 7 year old boy, or is it too intense? Why is it PG13?

It is pretty intense; there are some bloody and frightening images, and one particularly intense scene at the beginning involving a fire. However there is nothing too shocking and certainly nothing sexually inappropriate.

If the 7 year old has seen something like Lord of the Rings or the 2005 Chronicles of Narnia, he'd probably be fine watching this. But if he's used to American animated movies, this might be a bit much. A good entry point to Miyazaki for him might be Ponyo, Porco Rosso, or Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. All three are fun adventure films that are a little less intense and would introduce him to this style of animation.

Thank you so much for this review! This has been the only movie to come out recently that I thought might be worth seeing, and I greatly appreciate an analysis from a Catholic perspective before testing it myself.

You're welcome James! I certainly saw nothing to be concerned about from a Catholic perspective, and I think it really dovetails well with JRR Tolkien's ideas about Faerie and fairy stories. I hope you enjoy it!
