"The love for this film is so strong that when the (terrible) remake released in 2019 it earned more than a billion dollars."

That's mind-boggling.

I didn't think the original/1994 _Lion King_ was at the level of, say, _The Little Mermaid_ or _Beauty and the Beast_, but we agree, it was much, much better than much of what followed at Disney, after the 1990s "little Renaissance". (In terms of the visuals and music, arguably it was better, or at least on par with those high-water marks. I think it was in the characters and story that it was second-tier.)

I guess calling something one of the less impressive works in the little Renaissance is a little like--well, like calling something one of the less impressive works of Lin-Manuel Miranda: It's a high bar; the "mediocre" work of a great artist is still better than the alternative.

But I think that's precisely why the failings of Disney or Miranda seem like such a disappointment. We expected better from them.

What did you think of _Mufasa_?
