It was my first anniversary, we’d just had our first kid, and we didn’t have the money for a fancy date. Our solution? A walk through a pumpkin patch — followed by Roofman, a story my wife already knew by heart thanks to her true-crime obsession.
To our surprise, Roofman turned out to be a genuinely engaging and heartfelt watch. The film follows a criminal who earns his nickname after robbing several fast-food chains by cutting through their roofs. After landing in jail, he escapes and manages to live undetected inside a Toys “R” Us for almost a year — even starting a relationship under an alias while hiding behind a bike rack wall.
The performances across the board are fantastic, with several big-name actors slipping into smaller background roles that add texture without distraction. Channing Tatum once again proves his acting chops, disappearing into the role of the brilliant but woefully misguided protagonist, while Kirsten Dunst delivers a sincere, deeply human performance that anchors the story emotionally.
