2025 continues to bring fascinating explorations of human nature.

The remedy for the Black pill
When the term “Relevant Social Commentary” is ever associated with a film, it generates an eye roll and a vague feeling of dread in me. Too many films in the modern era strive for this and end up saying the exact same things every other film for the last decade has said. Yorgos Lanthimos has also thrown his 2 bits in for social commentary throughout his bizarre filmography. As someone who did not care too much for the content and subject matter of The Favorite and Poor Things, it was nice to see something from Lanthimos that sparked my interest without the problematic content of Poor Things. Bugonia is much more in line with films like The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster (both of which are fantastic Greek Weird Wave films in their own right), offering a dense, disturbing, and satirical view of the terminally online “black pilled” world we currently live in.
