Terry Gilliam’s absurdist rendering of Orwell’s 1984 makes for one of the more unique and memorable film experiences. It’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who’ve seen it, it’s not something they’ll forget anytime soon. The idea of an authoritarian regime using technology to control and monitor the populace is nothing new, but Gilliam’s surrealist sensibilities offer something eccentric, ironic, and visually arresting. Though the aesthetic is rooted in the past—specifically 1940s America, where characters stroll through blocky metropolises in trench coats and fedoras—the world is unmistakably a futuristic dystopia.
