Sketch (2025)
By Joe Wilson
The latest offering from Angel Studios (distributed but not produced by them) is an intriguing step forward in kid's films marketed towards Christians. At its core, Sketch is a cute, fun, heartfelt story about family, loss, creativity, and love. However, it's also clearly a love-letter to 1980s style kids movies and like those films has mild cussing, kids in mortal peril, and some truly scary moments. I would liken this film to a kids' version of Jurassic Park in some of the situations and level of horror present. In the film, a young girl mourning the loss of her mother uses a sketchbook as a way to healthily express some of the dark and violent emotions she is processing. However, the drawings are magically brought to life and start terrorizing her family and their small town. Her creations are comically violent, but when brought to life are indeed legitimately scary, and director Seth Worley uses the whole bag of horror movie tricks (as well as some really creative and impressive CGI) to craft a very creative and compelling picture. In my opinion, he did his job too well; I almost would not show this film to a child under 10, perhaps older if you went to the theater for it. However, as a good family film for tweens and teens it's fun, creative, charming, and entertaining for adults as well as kids.
