The 1970s were a crazy time for cinema: I would recommend anyone who wanted to do a deep dive into the era read Peter Biskind’s Easy Riders, Raging Bulls to get a true sense of this transitional, tumultuous time for Hollywood and motion pictures at large.
Television had dominated the 1950s and 1960s, and the combination of shrinking audiences and expensive box-office bombs like Cleopatra were causing studios to verge on near-bankruptcy. Enter the New Hollywood: Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Altman (to name a few) all emerged in this time and for a decade exercised unprecedented levels of autonomy and creative control, resulting in ten years of cinematic experimenting which resulted in some of the greatest films of all time.
