I agree! I love how the movie subverted a lot of typical romcom tropes to keep the audience on their toes. Also, Roumie’s casting is gold — his presence alone in his role made for a lot of natural comedy!
Thanks for the review. But not too long at all. Rather I was wanting it not to end. Been looking up related videos ever since (EWTn has new series interviews with James and Roumie). The movie made back its money in first seven days. Who knows how far it will go. My husband and I saw it and he said he’d be surprised if there were 10 in audience: the place was sold out!
I haven't seen it but planning to in the next week. I agree that so many rom-coms are sentimental and/or vulgar dreck. I'd just mention that Eternity, starring Miles Teller & Elizabeth Olson, came out in late November, 2025, was very enjoyable. Actually funny, not much vulgarity. Okay, it's a bit vague and heterodox about the afterlife but...
I have a thesis, which I've never bothered to flesh out, that the best rom-coms are, in fact, where the guy is chasing the girl. Girl is still a main character, but the guy is the motivated one. The sentimental, vulgar, or slapstick-y ones are where the female is the protagonist (like Kate Beckinsale starred in). I don't know why this should be. Some of the best, of course, are where the two characters are equally motivated, e.g., When Harry Met Sally.
