I have seen many people comment that this is a deeply catholic film, I have yet to understand what they mean, interesting to hear about St. Micheal the Archangel, although otherwise, does he seem antagonistic or just agnostic to the faith?

Simply agnostic. It's funny, in a recent interview moderated by Bradley Cooper, Del Toro starts off very much expressing that he is a "lapsed" Catholic but by the end after going into his beliefs about man and fatherhood and humanity he expressed out loud, "I might still be Catholic!". I think since the deaths of both his parents in the last ten years he is now revisiting the faith of his childhood in a new light. If you're interested in seeing what I mean here I would highly recommend checking out his 'Pinocchio' on Netflix: it has some of the most potent Christian imagery I've seen in an animated secular film in some time.

I've started watching that film to prepare myself for Frankenstein, I was jawdropped seeing all the religious iconography, even if some things were concerning. I was also fascinated in one of his interviews where he mentioned the story of the Wolf of St Francis, and how he expounded in his opposition of so called the "enlightenment" age. Hes a fascinating and elusive man for sure!
